Home brew some Egg Coffee!

Yes, it sounds a bit repulsive I agree, but tastes nothing like it!!

This beverage is quite famous in Scandinavian countries although versions of the egg coffee can be seen in other cultures too – a popular being the Vietnamese egg coffee.

What does it taste like? Just like regular black coffee with absolutely no bitterness. This is the result of reaction between the protein in eggs to the polyphenols in coffee. Unlike forms of filter coffee, the oils in the coffee aren’t filtered out. The strength of the brew is also decently strong – although this could be tweaked a bit with the amount of time one leaves the brew simmering.

Egg coffee recipe – Getting down to making one

For the heck of it, you should definitely try making one and it’s darn simple. No funky coffee machines or ingredients required. And I confess, it’s not one of those paleo-diet shenanigans and although there might be some health benefits, it’s certainly not to advocate any sort of diet.

What you’ll need

1 whole egg – raw egg / there is an option of adding egg shells too – although you may need to let go of your inhibitions a bit, and good luck with that :)

1 cup water

1 1/2 tbsp ground coffee – I used espresso blend ground coffee; (I use the same proportion of ground coffee to make a big mug of cappuccino.)

First add the egg into the ground coffee and blend until smooth. Add a bit of water to it to help you with the process.

Then in a saucepan, bring the water to boil. Add the mixture of egg and ground coffee into it, and set it to simmer immediately. It is said the strength of the brew increases with the time you let it simmer, without the coffee getting any bitter. I let it simmer for about 10 mins and my brew was fairly strong. Turn off the heat and let it cool a bit ~ 5 mins.

Don’t be alarmed with the coagulated coffee egg mixture that floats on the top. It’s expected, and just filter out the coffee using a tea strainer and tastes good when served either hot or cold!

That’s it really! Unless you tell someone, nobody is going to even guess it’s an egg coffee, but they are sure to be surprised when the coffee doesn’t taste bitter at all ;)
